July 9, 2026 1 min read Wild Card 8 ingredients

That jar of kimchi your Korean roommate's mom sent is about to become your favorite midnight snack. No wok, no problem, no witnesses.

Ingredients

0/8 ready
  • 1 cup leftover white rice (or microwave rice packet)
  • 1/4 cup kimchi, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon kimchi juice
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 sheet of seaweed, torn into pieces
  • Squeeze of ketchup (controversial but correct)

The Story & Steps

Real talk: fried rice was invented for leftovers, which makes it the patron saint of dorm cooking. This version is tangy, spicy, and requires exactly one mug and zero explanation to your RA.

The Technique

  1. If your rice is cold and clumpy, break it up with your fingers. This is therapeutic. Embrace it.
  2. In your mug, combine the rice, chopped kimchi, kimchi juice, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix it up like you're angry at it.
  3. Microwave for 1 minute to warm everything through.
  4. Make a little well in the center of the rice and crack the egg into it. Use a fork to scramble the egg slightly, then stir it through the rice.
  5. Microwave for another 45-60 seconds until the egg is cooked. Stir halfway through if you remember.
  6. Top with torn seaweed pieces and—hear me out—a tiny squeeze of ketchup. It adds sweetness and umami. Don't @ me.

The best part? Your whole room now smells like kimchi, which means your floormates will leave you alone. Personal space and dinner? That's called winning.
