Harissa Honey Halloumi
Squeaky cheese meets spicy-sweet glaze in this five-minute wonder. Pan-fried halloumi has never been this exciting.
Ingredients
- 8 oz halloumi cheese, sliced into ½-inch slabs
- 2 tablespoons harissa paste
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Fresh mint leaves for garnish
Preparation
Halloumi is the cheese that made grilling cheese mainstream, but we're taking it in a spicier direction. The combination of fiery harissa and sweet honey creates a glaze that caramelizes beautifully against the salty cheese.
Preparation
- Pat halloumi slices dry with paper towels (this helps them brown better).
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry halloumi slices for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy at the edges.
- While cheese cooks, whisk together harissa and honey in a small bowl.
- Transfer fried halloumi to a plate, immediately drizzle with harissa-honey mixture, and tear fresh mint leaves over the top.
Serve immediately while the cheese is still hot and squeaky. The residual heat will slightly melt the glaze, creating a glossy, spicy-sweet coating. This works beautifully as an appetizer, salad topper, or the world's most interesting breakfast.
